]]> http://staffordshirehelicopters.com/blog/helicopter-gift-video/feed/ 0 Andy completes his Helicopter Skills Test http://staffordshirehelicopters.com/blog/helicopter-skills-test-pass/ http://staffordshirehelicopters.com/blog/helicopter-skills-test-pass/#comments Wed, 11 May 2011 13:15:51 +0000 admin http://staffordshirehelicopters.com/?p=819 Andy Perkins successfully completed his Helicopter Skills test at Staffordshire Helicopters this week, the culmination of helicopter flying lessons taken over the past year.  This is like the “driving test” for Helicopter PPL (H) students and consists of a number of exercises carried out under the scrutiny of a CAA examiner which include a comprehensive set of maneuvers,  proper execution of  emergency procedures, navigation tasks and an assessment of general handling and the application of good airmanship in general.  Andy did really well as it was quite a blustery day when the test was carried out, drawing  favourable comments from his examiner about his helicopter flying abilities !  This is the first Skills Test pass embarking from Staffordshire Heliport and therefore the first PPL to be attained from our new location.

To remain current Andy needs to fly helicopters for 30 minutes every 90 days and complete a 30 minute assessment every year.

The Raven 11 was introduced in 2002 featuring a more powerful, fuel-injected engine and wider blades, allowing a higher gross weight and improved altitude performance.

In 1997, a Robinson R44 was piloted by Jennifer Murray for the first helicopter circumnavigation of the world by a woman, covering a distance of 36,000 miles in 97 days. Chilean president Sebastian Pinera owns one of these choppers, and has made several public appearances flying it.

Solo flying is a major part of  the Helicopter PPL and is perhaps the major event in a student’s flying training (apart from gaining the licence of course) with solo navigation exercises and time flying in the circuit part of the helicopter licence qualifying requirement.

This initial part of the course leading up to first solo entails learning to fly the helicopter in forward flight, turning, climbing, descending, hovering, landing and taking off. You will also learn the procedure of gliding the helicopter, known as autorotation. Experience will be gained in making radio calls and flying the helicopter in and around the airfield (circuits).

People ask us when the best time of year to start helicopter flying lessons is.  There is no real “best” answer but springtime will increase the possibility of a run of good helicopter flying weather which is of great benefit to continuity in flight training and less days lost to poor visibility and foul weather.  The longer daylight hours also mean that training can be done during the evening and some of our students take two or more helicopter flying lessons in a day.  This close continuity often results in their flight training progress being improved.

However, winter can also present some good weather for helicopter flying, some of the best, clearest days are during the winter months and we are certainly kept busy flying when “the met” permits.

Helicopter owners and pilots can call in for fuel and we already have supplies for fuelling avgas and having  jet installed soon.  At the moment this can be pre booked by telephone, but our heliport R/T base station arrives any day now so pilots will be able to radio forward to request helicopter refuelling facilities. We have a new frequency 123.750

Corporate helicopter flying and training will be a big part of our activities at the new Staffordshire Heliport and anyone considering an exciting day out with their colleagues or undertaking helicopter flight training should contact us for a competitive helicopter flying package custom designed to match their needs.

We are also on schedule to have a charter AOC facility operating by the end of the year.  All in all it’s been a busy 12 months for us setting the training up and looks like we are looking forward to a busy year ahead !!!!

He started the weekend converting his UK (JAA/CAA) Helicopter PPL  to the FAA licence with Paul and passed his FAA helicopter flight test with Adam yesterday,  making a total of 7 hours flying including the FAA test.

“This was much cheaper than taking the training in The States and it’s good to have helicopter flying lessons in the familiar surroundings of staffordshire, although a touch colder, perhaps.  It is extremely beneficial to have FAA helicopter training and accreditation available in the UK and I would recommend anyone to take this route if needed. “
